JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) - Officials said an East Tennessee man is facing charges in connection to the death of his girlfriend's 16-month-old child.

The Johnson City Press reported 27-year-old Jonathan Cravens is charged with felony child abuse-neglect.

Cravens made his first appearance Friday in Washington County Sessions Court and a judge appointed the public defender's office to represent him.

Police said the death occurred in August after Cravens reported the child wasn't breathing.

An arrest warrant says Cravens initially told police that he had taken the child to the mall, but changed his story when surveillance video showed that he went alone. He told police he interacted with the child upon his return.

Prosecutor Erin McArdle said officials are awaiting final results of an autopsy on the child, who had no visible injuries.
