SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. – Three people were killed Monday in two separate crashes in Smith County on Monday.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said 66-year-old James C. Spurlock Jr. and 65-year-old Dorthula K. Spurlock, of Lebanon, were killed in the crash on Interstate 40 eastbound at mile marker 262 around 6:15 p.m..

A report said James was driving a 2004 Ford Expedition when he lost control in a curve, went off the roadway, and struck a guardrail. It then went down an embankment, overturned, and landed on its top.

Both were wearing their seatbelts, but the cause of the crash remained under investigation.

A third person was killed earlier in the day on State Highway 53. The THP said a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Jeramie Reed crossed the center line and struck a Mercedes head-on.

The driver of the Mercedes, identified as 72-year-old Doras S. Williams, was injured, while his passenger, 68-year-old Wanda Williams, was killed. Reed was also hurt in the crash.

A report said all three were wearing their seatbelts.
