Dove Awards Returns To Nashville

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 44th Annual Dove Awards returned home to a big crowd in Nashville Tuesday night.

Singer-songwriter Matt Redman won a leading six trophies and TobyMac was named artist of the year.

Redman used his song "10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)" to rule the Gospel Music Association's annual Christian music awards, winning songwriter of the year and song of the year.

It was TobyMac's second artist of the year award on his seventh nomination in the category and his first since 2008. He won a total of four awards to bring his career total to 18.

Other top winners included Jason Crabb with four, Tasha Cobbs with three, and Chris Tomlin, Tamela Mann and Lecrae with two each.

In 2011, the Gospel Music Association, GMA, moved the Christian music award show to Atlanta, Georgia, but decided to bring back the show home to Nashville.

"Bringing it back here feels like bringing it back home. It's a family of artists who love being together and they love having it in their backyards," said UP TV Networks Vice Chairman Brad Siegel.

This year's show had many firsts, including the venue -- Allen Arena at Lipscomb University -- and co-hosts Kirk Franklin and Amy Grant.

Performers included: Big Daddy Weave, Tamela Mann, Tasha Cobbs and Amy Grant, KB and tobyMac to name a few.

A few Lipscomb University students were able to sit in on some of the rehearsals including Anna Bray and Coco Stewart.

"It's really exciting to be able to watch the different performers just come by us and we just got waved at by Rick Warren and we saw Jamie Grace, so it's really exciting," said Bray.

Tuesday's award show will air on UP TV Network Monday night at 7 p.m. CDT.
