FRANKLIN, Tenn. - October is domestic violence awareness month. Thursday night, the Williamson County Domestic Violence Task Force held a vigil to shed light on the issue.

"Domestic violence is one of the most common forms of violence in the United States," Franklin Police Chief David Rahinsky told a group gathered for the vigil.

Survivors of domestic violence also spoke to the crowd. Lindsey Hart was victimized by her live-in boyfriend in 2011.

"I went to bed at 10 and I guess he was mad because we were splitting up, and at 2:30 in the morning he comes up, walks up 32 steps, and douses a pot of oil on me," Hart explained.

She experienced extensive physical damage from burns over 40% of her body. Her life has completely changed since she was assaulted.

"All the things that I enjoy have been taken from me," Hart said.

Her now ex-boyfriend was sentenced to 40 years in prison for 1st degree attempted murder.

"It's never okay, it's never okay," said Gina Iser.

She is also a domestic violence survivor. It took her several attempts to break-free from her ex-husband, but she finally did. She is now an advocate and helps others who are dealing with the problem.

Iser said no matter where you live, there is help available.

"All the different counties have resources. Use them, use them to your advantage and empower yourself to come from being a victim, to a survivor. It's out there, you can do it," said Iser.

Most counties not only have advocates who can help victims become survivors, they also have shelters to help the victim get out of a dangerous living situation.
