THOMPSON'S STATION, Tenn. - Three elk are on the loose after escaping from a Williamson County farm.

The animals have been spotted by several witnesses around the Thompson's Station area over the last few days.

"It was an absolute surprise," said Jeff Underwood, who spotted the elk Monday evening while driving along 840. "It is not something in Middle Tennessee we get to see hardly ever.  We started taking lots of pictures."

The elk were also spotted Monday in the Tollgate Village neighborhood in Thompson's Station by James Sharp of Columbia.

"I was pleased with how the photos came out," said Sharp.  "It was a pretty amazing thing to see."

Officials with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture said the TWRA notified them of the situation Monday.

Officials said the elk are not wild, and are part of a domestic herd owned by Williamson County farmer Bobby Pinson.  His farm is located on Greerview Circle between Franklin and Thompson's Station.

Since the elk are privately owned, they are considered livestock, and the owner is responsible for catching them.  Until that happens, state officials are warning people who see them to be careful.

"Obviously, with something that large, you want to be concerned about them getting out on a roadway, and doing damage to property," said Department of Agriculture Director of Public Affairs, Tom Womack. "I would not interfere with the animals or excite them at this point, and hopefully, they can get back to the rightful owner."

Womack said the owner could be charged with a class C misdemeanor for letting the livestock run at large.  At this point, no citation has been issued.

Pinson could not be reached for comment.

If you see the elk, call the Williamson County Sheriff's Department's non-emergency number at (615) 790-5560.
