Middle Tennessee To Add 629 Area Code

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Anyone applying for new phone service in Nashville and Middle Tennessee will get a new area code starting in the spring of 2015.

The new code will be (629), the Tennessee Regulatory Authority announced Thursday.

After studies showed the digits following the (615) area code would run out by late 2015, the TRA looked at options for assigning a new area code.

On Monday afternoon, the TRA voted to approve the overlay plan, which means anyone getting new phone service, cell, or landline will be given the new designated area code after the existing numbers run out.

Phone companies have until July to make their networks overlay ready.

Customers will then have seven months to try it out, using ten digits to dial, before the full change goes into effect. During the same time period, phone companies will be given the same amount of time to work out any problems.

Middle Tennessee has been home to the 615 area code since 1954, making it the second region to get a designated area code after Memphis.
