NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Bridge repairs will shut down a portion of Interstate 40 over the weekend.

A spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Transportation said crews will shut down all lanes of I-40 west at mile marker 209 over Charlotte Avenue at 8 p.m. Friday. All lanes of Charlotte Avenue underneath the bridge will also be closed.

The $399,060 project will remove and then replace a 200 foot long section of the concrete bridge deck.

In August and September, crews were called out to make emergency repairs to the bridge after pieces of concrete fell to the roadway below.

TDOT is asking drivers who plan to be in the area to allow extra time, be patient, and follow detour signs.

"This is a big project for downtown Nashville this weekend," said Deanna Lambert, TDOT Spokesperson. "Anyone who is planning to come into the downtown area we certainly ask you to plan your route accordingly.  Be aware that you won't be able to access downtown through Broadway, Church Street or Demonbreun."

Construction will continue throughout the weekend, and the roadway is expected to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.

An estimated $40 million project to completely rehabilitate the I-40/Charlotte Avenue Bridge, as well as three others, will follow in 2015.

Detours will be in place for drivers who need to find their way around the area:
