NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The writers and publishers behind this year's most popular country music songs were honored in music city this weekend as part of the SESAC Nashville music awards.

Song of the year for the SESAC awards went to "Cruise" written by Jessie Rice.

Kiefer Thompson was one of the other big winners of the night.

He's part of the duo "Thompson Square," and he won the coveted Songwriter of the Year award.

This is all ahead of the CMA awards held at the Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday.

Before the event, Thompson talked about the importance of lesser known awards shows like the SESAC music awards honoring country music writers.

11:08:30 "If it wasn't for the people in this room, we wouldn't have the other awards shows," Thompson said.  "They're the ones that write all the songs, and when I moved to town that's all I really wanted to do."

SESAC tells us more than 500 songwriters, producers and industry execs attended the awards show Sunday night.
