FRANKLIN, Tenn. - A project that's been in the works for years is once again in the spotlight in Franklin.

The future of the Mack Hatcher extension project was the focus of a meeting at Pearre Creek Elementary School, and was attended by residents, city and state leaders.

State Rep. Jeremy Durham, as well as state Sen. Jack Johnson coordinated the meeting so residents could get an update on the project from Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer, and ask questions.

"Any time you have an $80 million project, there is a process that goes along with it," said Rep. Durham, "We want people to know what's going on and be able to draw attention to the project."

The proposed project would extend the road from where it dead ends near Hillsboro Road across to Highway 96 west.  Currently, the city of Franklin has pitched in $5 million, but needs state assistance to complete the project.

Franklin residents packed the gym at the elementary school to try to convince TDOT to put the project on its three-year construction plan.  Many wore T-shirts reading "Get Mack Back on Track."  Supporters said the project is needed now more than ever as more homes and businesses move into the area, and traffic gets worse.

"It has been promised for a long time," said project supporter Dana Minetos. "The west side of town is great, but traffic is slow and we need some help."

"The project has just gotten off track," said project supporter Mike Bolduc. "Our elected officials need to do something.  That is what they are elected for.  We need to get something done."

Despite all the feedback provided, no final decisions were made at the meeting.  Rep. Durham said it could be another year before residents know if the project will get on TDOT's list.
