Vandy Opens Indoor Field For Football Practice, Track Teams

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Vanderbilt Commodores finally have a place to practice when thunder and lightning or frigid temperatures make it impossible to work outside.

Vanderbilt opened the new indoor building Tuesday that houses a 120-yard field for the football team along with a six-lane track for the track and cross country teams. It's part of a $31 million project renovating the recreation center with the key feature the field Commodores coaches have wanted for years.

Coach James Franklin had to take his Commodores over to Tennessee State's indoor field last December prepping for the Music City Bowl.

Athletic director David Williams said this building is proof Vanderbilt officials meant what they said three years ago when they talked of committing to being competitive in Southeastern Conference football.

The first official event at the new facility will be the Commodores' first indoor track meet on December 3.
