15-Year-Old Charged With Fatal Market Robbery

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A teenager was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting death of a man during a robbery at a north Nashville market.

North Precinct detectives charged 15-year-old Veretez P. McGill with criminal homicide and aggravated robbery in the death of of Darrell Lyndell Wright. McGill was taken into custody without incident at Stratford High School. 

News of the arrest brought some relief to Wright's family and friends.

"You can't bring him back, but you make him rest in peace," said Junior Church, one of Wright's longtime friends. "This was some good news."

The deadly shooting happened on August 11 at the Church & Son Market on 15th Avenue North. Wright, 50, was visiting a friend at the market when the two suspects entered the market-- one suspect fired a shot, which hit Wright. He died on the scene. The robbers fled on foot with less than $10.

Old photos of Wright still cover the walls at the Church & Son Market, which was one of his favorite hangouts. 

"You can still feel his spirit in here," said Church. "Darrell enjoyed when life. I never saw Darrell with his head down. It was always good being around him."

McGill was believed to be one of two suspects. Police said the investigation was ongoing to confirm the identity of the second suspect involved.

"I want everyone who was involved to be brought to justice," said Tiffany Parker, Wright's daughter. "They took a lot. They need to be brought to justice."
