COLUMBIA, Tenn. – The number of road fatalities has been on the rise in Maury County.

Law enforcement agencies have recently announced they are teaming up to crack down on the number of traffic related fatalities, which has tripled since last year.

Since the beginning of the year, 15 people have died on the roads- three times the number of fatalities the county had last year.

In response, the law enforcement agencies in the area, including Tennessee Highway Patrol, Maury County Sheriff's Department, Columbia Police, Mt. Pleasant Police, and the Governor's Highway Safety Office announced a plan that will include more enforcement until the end of the year, including patrol, checkpoints, and even stops in local bars.

"Our partnership realized that those numbers mean someone's life, not just during the holiday season but all throughout the year, 365 days," said the Governor's Highway Safety Office Director Kendell Poole.

Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol noted the number of crashes related to distracted drivers has decreased in Maury County from 338 to 137 crashes.
