Possible Security Lapse At Nashville Airport

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An official Nashville International Airport Incident report has detailed a security lapse after a flagged passenger disappeared and got onto his flight before being found.

The incident occurred in October. Sources said Transportation Security Administration agents flagged the man in a security checkpoint for an additional search, but somehow he left for his gate before that could happen.

The report said TSA staff, "observed another screener improperly screen the subject and failed to immediately notify her supervisor."

TSA agents contacted airport police "regarding a subject that was improperly screened and was considered an access control issue." Others called it a security breach.

The timeline of how it all happened raises questions.

The security breach happened at 1:01 p.m., according to the report, but the TSA did not report it to airport police until 1:50 p.m. That's 49 minutes later and by then, it was too late. The report stated that the security video shows the man boarding a flight to Atlanta at 1:03 p.m. He was airborne before the police search even began.

Security officers tracked down the passenger in Atlanta and determined he did not pose a threat.

In just the past two weeks, TSA agents have confiscated loaded handguns from the carry-on luggage of two passengers at the Nashville airport. If either one of them had slipped security, the guns could have ended up on a plane.

TSA officials said they are still looking into the incident.
