'Atheist Church' Holds First Nashville Service

NASHVILLE, Tenn - A new church congregation has popped up in the middle of the Bible Belt which has raised some eyebrows.

Organizers said it's all about celebrating everything, except God. It has been dubbed the "atheist church," but co-founder Sanderson Jones doesn't like that name much.

"It is a jam session with a purpose," he said. "And the purpose is to live this one life we know we have as fully as possible. We've got an awesome motto too: Live better, help often, and wonder more."

The creators were in Nashville, Thursday, for the first "service" in the buckle of the Bible Belt.

The Sunday Assembly started in London last January and has since spread around the world. Organizers said their mission is to create a godless congregation in every community that wants one.

The Sunday Assembly claims to be "radically inclusive" and the creator encourages people other than atheists to attend.

Jones said one of the other congregations in the UK was started by a Christian woman.
