81-Year-Old DeKalb County Man Kidnapped and Robbed

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. – An 81-year-old man was kidnapped at knife point by a 29-year-old woman he called a friend, according to police.

It was from his rural home in McMinnville that the 81-year-old traveled 15 miles to a home in Smithville to visit 29-year-old Amanda Maxwell. The victim had apparently known the woman for three weeks.

"When he got there, Miss Maxwell then grabbed him from behind, took out a box cutter and forced him back into his vehicle on the passenger side," said Detective Brandon Donnell with the Smithville Police Department.

According to officials, Maxwell drove the victim to two ATMs, the first being a Regions Bank. They apparently were not able to get any money there, so she drove to a Liberty State Bank, where she allegedly forced him to withdraw $300.

Police said Maxwell drove back to the Smithville home and picked up her boyfriend, 31-year-old Charles Reagan.

"He sat behind [the victim] in the car just to make sure he stayed in the car to get what they was wanting," said Donnell.

Detective Donnell said Reagan did not take part in the first trip to the ATM, but joined Maxwell sometime after that.

Officials said his job was to keep an eye on the 81-year old, but police said he did not do a very good job.

"And at a traffic light up there, the victim jumped out and started running," said Donnell.

Police said the victim was able to run into a business and call 911, while both Reagan and Maxwell drove off with his car.

"They stayed a night at a local hotel," said Donnell. "We had somebody watch the house all night and they came back the next day to get some things and that is when we got them."

By Wednesday, Reagan and Maxwell were behind bars facing felony charges of aggravated kidnapping and theft. Police said Maxwell was facing additional charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

The 81-year-old victim did not suffer any life threatening injuries, but was hurt from when he jumped out of the car.

Maxwell and Reagan have been scheduled to appear before a judge November 21.
