KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A former Knox County Criminal Court judge has been released from prison, where he was serving a six-month sentence for lying to investigators.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported Richard Baumgartner was released on Friday from the Gilmer work camp in Glenville, W. Va. He will spend two weeks on home detention in Knoxville to finish out his sentence.

Baumgartner was convicted in October 2012 of lying to cover up his purchase of prescription painkillers from a mistress.

His drug abuse while on the bench led to new trials for two suspects in the high-profile murder of a young Knoxville couple in 2007. Both were convicted again.

In state court, Baumgartner was given probation in exchange for resigning and pleading guilty to official misconduct.

He is appealing his federal conviction.
