Greenbrier’s Mayor Case Goes Before Judge

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. - After being arrested at city hall for stealing thousands of dollars from the local Toys for Tots organization, Greenbrier's mayor was scheduled for his first appearance in court Friday.

For the first since his arrest, we thought we would see Mayor Billy Wilson at his arraignment at the Robertson County Courthouse, but as the case came and went, we never saw Mayor Wilson.

"It is customary that the client does not come on the first appearance date, because the only purpose is to get the discovery and for lawyers to enter their names as attorney of record," said Wilson's attorney, Jeff Walker.

On November 4, TBI agents arrested Wilson at city hall. He's accused of stealing more than $60,000 from the local Toys for Tots program from 2005 to 2013.

"Basically we just ask everybody to reserve judgment until all the facts come out and the investigation is complete," said Walker.

Since his arrest, Wilson has been quiet, declining all interviews and to answer any questions about the allegations.

"That's just truly out of respect for the system that he's not making any comments and we have told him not to do so," said Walker. "There really is nobody in a position to be able too fairly do that; we certainly do not want to influence any perspective jurors that may be out there if this case goes to trial."

Walker said the investigation is ongoing and the mayor is trying to stay strong through it all saying, "We'll get through this and I'm sure the current result will be reached in the end."

NewsChannel 5 spoke with a city administrator and he said they have no plans of taking action.

As for a resignation, Walker said his client hasn't gotten to that point yet.
