Little Houdini Escape Artist Is In Trouble Again

ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. - He's known as the Little Houdini who escaped from police custody eight times over the years.  Christopher Gay stole country star Crystal Gayle's bus after one escape. He's had a song written about him and there's a movie in the works about his life.

But now Gay is in trouble again.

"He's a troubled guy with a past," said his attorney Kate Dyer.  She concedes his past is colorful, but his behavior keeps landing him in jail.

After serving years behind bars, he was recently released and vowed to get his life together.  But this past week he's accused of leading police on a high speed chase through three counties before barricading himself in his home.

"I was scared," Gay told NewsChannel 5 in a phone interview.

Gay's attorney said he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Deputies were searching for two robbery suspects and were stopping to check cars.  Gay became frightened -- though he had done nothing wrong -- and refused to stop.

"He's scared. He's paranoid. He's been in prison and he's afraid of going back again," said Dyer.

Dyer worked out an arrangement for her client to turn himself in to authorities later this week. If convicted of the evading arrest and assault he'll go back to jail.

Gay hopes the judge understands he ran because he was scared, not because he had anything to hide.

Gay made headlines years ago for escaping and stealing Gayle's tour bus so he could go visit his dying mother in Cheatham County. He then took it to Daytona Speedway, claiming to be the driver for Tony Stewart.

A national magazine wrote a story on his life and screenplay was written for a movie. Production on the project for now appears to have stalled.
