SMYRNA, Tenn. – Three family members remain hospitalized after suffering blunt force trauma in a domestic disturbance Thursday night in Smyrna.

The incident happened at a home on One Mile Lane. According to officials, 45-year-old Brian Gum attacked his father Dale, 72, his 13-year-old nephew and his 11-year-old niece inside the home.

Detectives said the boy was able to defend against the attack and able to subdue Gum.

Both Gum and his father were treated at StoneCrest Medical Center, then transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. The 11-year-old girl was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital. The boy was treated at StoneCrest and released.

"They're just a wonderful family that got caught up in a tragedy," said Jim Hill, who lives next door. "Bad things happen to good people. I pray that they'll be ok and these are good people."

Neighbors said the two children live with their mother, and their grandfather stays with them after school.

The investigation was ongoing.
