Funeral Plans Set for Former Sheriff

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. – Funeral services have been set for Sunday for former Robertson County sheriff, Gene Bollinger.

Outside the Robertson County historic courthouse flags fly at half-staff honoring a man known by most as sheriff, but for Beverly Webster, he was so much more.

"That's it, he was never a father to me; he was always my daddy," said Bollinger's only child.

For more than 50 years, Sheriff Gene Bollinger was a public servant working as a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper and most recently as sheriff of Robertson County up until his retirement in 2010.

In his 82 years he was known to make people laugh and those who knew him best only hoped it would last forever.

"Then he acquired pneumonia, double pneumonia, with the right lung being the worst," said Webster. They put him in intensive care and he stayed in intensive care for about a day and a half before he passed."

As Webster looked through pictures of her father, she remembers what her father would do when she fell asleep during their fishing trips.

"Actually he had taken the bait and put the fish on there and dropped it back into the water and then he made me think I caught the fish," said Webster.

Robertson County's current sheriff Bill Holt says Bollinger left a rich legacy.

"It wasn't just about policing, it was about community service, giving back to all the individuals," he said.

He was man that experienced a lot in his life and shared those lessons with everyone around him.

Visitation for Bollinger will be held Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. each night at Austin and Bell funeral home in Springfield.

The Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Springfield Baptist Church.
