CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A petition drive is forcing Chattanooga officials to reconsider a new law allowing health benefits for domestic partners of city employees.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports opponents of the law gathered enough signatures last week to make the City Council either revisit its November vote or allow the issue to go to referendum.

Chattanooga became the third city in Tennessee to vote to expand benefits to same-sex couples, after Collegedale and Knoxville.

City Attorney Wade Hinton said the petition suspends the law until the council reviews it again, which he said should happen in the next month.
