Memphis Orchestra Reaching Out To Community

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Symphony Orchestra is going to jail - to perform, that is.

Memphis Symphony's community outreach started with visits to schools, neighborhoods, community organizations and other nonprofits.

Some have become well known, such as the music mentoring program at the Soulsville Charter School. Another is the business-oriented Leading from Every Chair workshops on teamwork and leadership.

Rhonda Causie heads MSO's community engagement program and she says new projects are underway or under development.

One is collaborating with Elaine Blanchard's Prison Stories Project. Blanchard, a minister, writer and performance artist, has been working with women inmates at the Shelby County Correctional Center to develop their stories into plays.
