Murfreesboro Scammer Threatens To Shut Off Victims' Electricity

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Be careful if you get a call from someone claiming to be from the Murfreesboro Electric Department asking you to pay your bill.

The electric department says in the last two days, someone has been calling at least 20 businesses and homes in the area, saying they need to pay their electric bill -- threatening to turn off their electricity if they don't pay within the next hour.

The caller ID information on the phone even says they're calling from the Murfreesboro Electric department, but the department says it's a scam.

At least one person has fallen for it, turning over almost $2,000 to the scammer, but the department fears there could be several more victims.

"I'm sure there's customers out there who have paid this and do not realize they've even been scammed," said Amy Byers with the Murfreesboro Electric Department.

The scammers ask for payment to be loaded onto reusable credit and debit cards, which is something the electric department says they'd never ask customers to do.

The electric department says if you're contacted by someone saying you owe them money, you should just hang up, and then call the electric department about it yourself.
