NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A former employee of the Tennessee Department of Treasury faces an investigation over the possible theft of personal information belonging to some 6,000 state and Metro employees.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed Friday night that it raided the home of Steven Hunter, 24, of Hermitage to seize computers containing the information.

The incident came to light after Hunter's resignation Thursday, the TBI said. After his departure, Treasury officials discovered that Hunter sent personal information about state and Metro Nashville Davidson County employees from his state email account to his personal email account.

Information on the employees included social security numbers, full names, dates of birth and home addresses along with other personal information, the TBI said in a statement.

Treasury officials immediately contacted the TBI and District Attorney General Torry Johnson's office.

They also notified legislative leaders on Friday of the possible data breach. NewsChannel 5 Investigates learned about those legislative notifications, but agreed to delay reporting on the investigation until search warrants could be executed.

Treasury officials had declined to make any public statements Friday to avoid compromising the investigation.

Hunter was hired in July of 2013 to contact vendors doing business with the state of Tennessee.

The TBI says the investigation is on-going and, right now, no one has been charged. The DA will review the TBI case file when completed.
