Man Found Dead Inside Car On I-24 In Smyrna

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Tenn - A Rutherford County man was found shot to death inside of his car on the side of an interstate on Sunday morning.

Officials with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said another motorist made the discovery around 6:30 a.m. Sunday along Interstate 24, near the Almaville Road exit in Smyrna. The victim was identified as 47-year-old Jackie Warpoole, Jr. of Smyrna.

Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold said Warpoole was found slumped over the wheel of his silver Dodge Magnum. Investigators said Warpoole was shot once, but they don't know who pulled the trigger or whether he was shot before pulling over to the side of the road.

Authorities treated his death as a homiciden and his body was taken to the state Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.

Investigators said they were following leads from callers on Monday, and trying to determine what Warpoole was doing just before his death. The vehicle will be processed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Anyone with information that could help in the investigation is urged to call Detective Jamin Humphress at 615-904-3054.
