Woman's Apartment Key Unlocks More Than Just Own Home

SMYRNA, Tenn. – A Rutherford County woman said she's worried she may not be the only tenant who can enter her apartment.

Jessica Ballington said she discovered her key could also open her neighbor's apartment at the Laurel Wood Apartments in Smyrna.

Ballington said she made the discovery last week, while teaching her nearly 3-year-old daughter, Tinsley, about turning off lights in the house.

According to Ballington, her daughter saw a light outside of the apartment, but Jessica explained that it couldn't be turned off because it belonged to the apartment next door, which was vacant.  She said Tinsley wouldn't believe her. In order to show Tinsley she couldn't turn the light off, Jessica tried putting her key in the lock next door.

"I stuck my key in, and I thought it would just jiggle, but it turned, and I was able to open my next door neighbor's apartment," Ballington said.

Even though the apartment was vacant, Jessica said she still worries if she can get into a vacant apartment, if someone might be able to get into her own apartment with a different key.

"I'm just very concerned that just anyone could just come in here now," Ballington said.

Managers of the complex said they immediately changed the vacant apartment's lock. They called it an "extremely isolated incident." They insisted the tenants who live there are safe, and the locks they use have more than a thousand different key combinations.

The apartment manager said someone recently moved out of the next door apartment, and that locks are changed after each tenant leaves. They said Ballenger never would have had access to the apartment when someone was living there.
