COOKEVILE, Tenn. – A Putnam County man has been accused of attempting to steal drugs while his wife was giving birth to his child.

Edward Randolph was arrested while at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, accused of trying to steal drugs from his wife's delivery room.

Officials with the Cookeville Police Department said a nurse noticed Randolph going through a medical box in the labor room. Upon further investigation, the staff noticed missing medication from the box.

After a search of Randolph, authorities said they found syringes, needles, vials of medication hidden in his pockets. Some items were even found in his wife's shoe and a camera case, they said.

Police said they have no reason to believe his wife was involved.

"At no point did the suspect leave the unit, much less the facility," said Cookeville Regional Medical Center Spokesperson Melahn Finley. "Our staff was very diligent in discovered what happened and followed up by alerted security who in turn alerted the police department."

From the hospital, Randolph was taken to jail. Police said he is now facing charges of theft of property and possession of a controlled substance.

"You don't need to steal at all, and you certainly don't need to steal medicines from hospitals who truly need those medicines," Cookeville Police Detective Lieutenant Carl Sales.

Perhaps it wasn't the example a new father hoped to set for his newborn child.

Randolph's mother said she was there at the hospital as her son was being searched and then arrested. She shared he was able to spend time with his newborn daughter before he was taken to jail. She said she's shocked by the charges.

Randolph was released on bond, but police said this isn't the first time he's been in trouble before.

He was on probation from Jackson County for manufacturing marijuana.
