Parents Line Up To Shop At 'Last Minute Toy Store'

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A long line formed outside a West Nashville church Tuesday night, as people were anxious to get an opportunity to shop for Christmas gifts for their families.

The 61st Avenue United Methodist Church opened its annual Last Minute Toy Store on Wednesday. The store will be open December 18-21 from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is stocked with free toys for low-income Davidson County families who need a little help this Christmas.

Free tickets were given out 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. They will be given out again at 6:30 a.m. each day until Saturday on a first-come, first-serve basis at the church. Once tickets are given out, each parent will be told what time to come back that day to select toys for each eligible child.

Parents do not need to register, but must bring:

  • Picture I. D. for parent or guardian
  • Proof of Davidson County residence
  • ID for children showing their names and ages
  • Proof of Income: (such as pay stub; government assistance letter; separation from work notice; child support letter; other proof of need)

Volunteers have been working long hours organizing all the toys and grouping them by age group.  Shelves have been stocked with items ranging from stuffed animals to basketballs, and volunteers will restock shelves at the end of each day.  All items have been donated by local churches, community groups and the church works in cooperation with "Toys for Tots" and other toy providers.

Donations are still being accepted. Volunteers said there is a need for gifts for boys ages 13-18 and girls ages 8-18. All donations can be dropped off at the church.

This is the 20th year the store has been helping local families. In 2012, toys were given to 5,032 children from over 1,500 families.

The Last Minute Toy Store is located at the 61st Avenue United Methodist Church at 6018 New York Avenue. For more information visit:
