Tennessee Death Row Inmate Dies Of Natural Causes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Tennessee death row inmate convicted of a 1987 Shelby County murder has died of natural causes.

Officials said Michael Wayne Howell was pronounced dead at 10:08 a.m. Wednesday at the Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility in Nashville.

The 54-year-old was convicted of First Degree Murder and Grand Larceny in Shelby County. He was sentenced to death on October 26, 1989, for the 1987 murder of Alvin Kennedy, a Memphis convenience store clerk.

Howell was also convicted of First Degree Murder and sentenced to death in Oklahoma for the November 2, 1987 shooting death of Sgt. Charlene Calhoun.
