Passerby Pulls Unconscious Victim From Burning Vehicle

Posted: Updated:

MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. – A passerby was able to rescue an unconscious motorist from a burning vehicle after it struck a tree in Maury County on Christmas Eve morning.

The Maury County Fire Department said Robert C. Merritt, Jr. was involved in a crash around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on Raleigh Beard Road in the Bethel community. The vehicle left the road, struck a tree, and caught fire.

The passing motorist, identified as Ahren Longo, pulled the unconscious victim from the vehicle.

"I was just glad I could brighten up somebody's Christmas because I know how horrible it would be to lose someone at Christmas," said Longo.

Merritt's family said they were grateful to Longo and his generosity.

"You don't meet people like that every day," said Terry Merritt, Jr., the victim's nephew. "He could have just kept going."

The victim was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was said to be critical condition.
