Man Dies From Injuries After Being Struck By Car On I-24W

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 50-year-old man has died from his injuries after being struck by at least one car on westbound Interstate 24 on Thursday night.

Metro Police said James Begley, of 16th Avenue North, died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center following the crash around 7 p.m. Thursday on the Silliman Evans Bridge near the Shelby Avenue off ramp.

A preliminary investigation found that a Honda sedan was traveling west on I-24 when the driver, identified as 31-year-old Myra Drake of Hendersonville, swerved to the left to avoid Begley. Drake said she struck another vehicle when she swerved, which caused her to move back to the right.

Police said Begley was struck, though Drake denied hitting him. Evidence at the scene showed her Honda impacted Begley.

The vehicle Drake's Honda struck did not stop, and should have damage to the passenger side. Police said the vehicle may be white. It was unclear if that vehicle struck Begley as well.

There was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene, but police continue to investigate.

It was unclear why Begley was on the interstate.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said the roadway was closed until about 11:30 p.m. while police investigated. Eastbound traffic was not affected.
