Police Investigate Fatal West Nashville Shooting

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police said they are investigating a woman's claim of self-defense after she fatally shot her boyfriend.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said 39-year-old Anderous Reid was fatally shot by his girlfriend, 29-year-old Jessica Cothon. The shooting occurred inside an apartment at the Hallmark at Bellevue complex on River Road in West Nashville at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

"I came out and checked for my newspaper and noticed…a lot of commotion," neighbor Katy Rogers said.

According to police, Cothon claimed she shot Reid in self-defense after a domestic-related fight. Cothon told police she shot the victim after he physically attacked her.

Officials said the couple's three and six year old children, Cothon's 11- year old daughter and mother were also home at the time of the incident.

"I think it's really sad that it got to that point," Rogers said.

In 2007 Reid was charged and later convicted of felony assault after Cothon reported that he had beaten her head against the concrete and tried to burn her with a lighter.

Last December police were called again after a fight. At that time Cothon said Reid strangled her, slammed her head on the floor and kicked her. In that instance Cothon did not press charges that months later were eventually dropped.

In 1994 Anderous Reid was convicted of attempted murder and was sentenced to eight years in prison. In 2003 he was convicted of felony drug and gun possession.

Investigators said no charges have been filed against Cothon at this time.
