NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A four-floor expansion has been announced for Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt University plans to build the inpatient expansion on top of the hospital's southeast facade, located at the corner of Children's Way and Medical Center Drive. Each floor will add approximately 40,000 square feet, making inpatient capacity 1-million total square feet when complete.

The expansion will also relocate the hospital's helipad to the top of the new tower.

Dr. Steven Webber, Chair of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital, said the expansion will ensure the hospital will be able to help the growing number of children who need care.

"It's our goal never to say no to a child that wants to be admitted here or a family who wants to come here," said Dr. Webber.  "We've been able to achieve that goal with the previous expansions, and now we need to plan ahead for the next 10 years."

Construction is expected to begin in 2015, and will take 2 to 3 years to complete.  Details on funding have not been finalized yet.

Currently, the hospital is the region's only full-service children's hospital and operates 271 inpatient beds. With the expansion, the hospital hopes that number will grow to more than 300.

In May 2012, the hospital opened a $30 million, 30,000-square-foot, 33 bed expansion that created capacity for additional acute care, surgical and neonatal intensive care services.

The hospital opened in February 2004, and millions of children from all of the contiguous 48 states have been treated.
