NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The large storm system moving across the Northeast caused backlogged flights across the country, including here in Middle Tennessee.

Dozens of departing flights were canceled Thursday. Areas hit the hardest were cities likes Washington DC, Newark, Chicago and New York. Only making the situation worse, those places serve as hubs for a number of major airlines, meaning passengers at other airports were forced to sit and wait it out.

One by one they filled the chairs and benches at Nashville International Airport, dozens of stranded travelers who had no other choice but to get comfortable for the long wait.

At one point, half of all departing flights from Nashville were canceled because of the massive storm system that was pummeling parts of the Northeast with up to two feet of snow.

Traveler Shani Buchanan was trying to get to Abu Dhabi but got stuck in Nashville after her flight to New York City was canceled.

"To have all of these setbacks and layovers, it's very frustrating becuase I need to get back to work. That's not an option," she said. "It's just a waiting game."

The airlines canceled more than 1,800 flights nationwide in advance of the storm. Many were on regional airlines that handle shorter flights for the major carriers.

More than 500 flights in or out of Chicago O'Hare International Airport were canceled, according to FlightStats.com.

Officials at Boston Logan International Airport said they were closing down all operations at 8:30 p.m. EST.

Russell Pross was flying to Poland with his wife, their 2-year-old and 6-month-old. He said with no other options, travelers just have to go with the flow.

"I'm not stressed. Yes, I feel stressed, but you just got to take it as it goes. That's all you can do," said Pross.

Most major airlines said they will wave change fees because of the weather.
