PORTLAND, Tenn. – A woman and her infant son narrowly escaped a house fire in Sumner County.

Angel Sulzer said her home on Scattersville Road in Portland wasn't very big, but to her and her two young children, it was everything.

After she put her nine-month-old son down for a nap Thursday, Sulzer said she went to the kitchen and realized something was wrong.

"In the corner of my eye I see flames just rolling," said Sulzer.

A wall heater was on fire. She grabbed her keys, phone and baby and ran outside. Seconds later she knew how close they came to tragedy.

"There are flames just rolling out of my front door just rolling," she said.

Her daughter's back bedroom was completely cut-off by flames, but luckily the little girl was staying with her grandmother at the time.

Sulzer said she knows the fact that they are alive is the most important thing, but it's still hard to see everything they had is now gone.

Friday, Tina Hannah noticed Sulzer outside her burned home and stopped to offer a hug and support.

"I wanted to try and help," Hannah said. "I'm telling you I'm going to try to do whatever I can to help you."

Sulzer will spend the weekend looking for a new place to start over with the comfort there are people who care. The family has been staying in an area hotel throughout the weekend thanks to the Red Cross, but has to find a new place to live by Monday.

Firefighters said the home was a total loss, but the community's reaction has been overwhelming. So far they've collected lots of clothes and toys.

If you would like to help you can drop off any donations at the Portland Fire Department.
