Perfect Time Of Year For Fitness Club Bargains

Posted: Updated:

From Consumer Reports

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It's that time of year again to set goals for a new you. Resolutions to get in shape mean health clubs sign up more new members in January than at any other time of the year.

They're all competing for your business. That means you can save big on getting buff!

Joining the gym can be expensive but Consumer Reports says there are ways to save.

"Don't rush into anything. You might get the best deal if you sign up late in the month, because health clubs often have monthly sales quotas," says Amanda Walker, money advisor with Consumer Reports.

Another tip? Ask for a free pass. Many gym owners let you try before you buy.

"See if it fits you, because whether it's $10 or $100, if you don't use it, it's a waste of money. So really, find a gym that's most convenient for you and you feel most comfortable with, that meets your needs," says Anthony Tarricone from Equalize Fitness in New York.

Once you decide which club to join, make sure you negotiate.

"Sometimes gyms will cut the price if you pay yearly instead of month to month, or ask if they will throw in a free wellness assessment or a personal training session," says Walker.

There could also be savings in numbers. Some gyms offer a discount if you sign up with a group, so try rallying friends or co-workers.

Before you start, check your insurance. Some plans like United Healthcare reimburse members several hundred dollars a year if they join and use a participating fitness center.

Discounts can also be found online. Gyms may post deals on their websites or on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. You can also check savings sites like Groupon and Living Social.

Make sure to carefully read any contract before signing to avoid additional costs or cancellation fees.

If your resolutions include getting physically fit and fiscally fit, you may be able to do both at the same time.
