Emergency Room Reopens In Portland

PORTLAND, Tenn - For residents of Portland and the surrounding area, a trip to the emergency room was not only stressful but a long drive.

This Monday, that will change with the opening of a new TriStar free-standing emergency room.

An ER in Portland is not a new concept, it's actually an old one residents are getting back.

The new ER will open Monday evening inside the old Portland hospital on Redbud Drive, just off of South Broadway.

The 10,000 square-foot facility has eight treatment rooms and cost $3.8 million in remodels to the existing building.

The opening is just in time for some bitter cold temperatures to arrive. Staff expects to be busy on their first night.

Sherry Cox is a registered nurse and the director of emergency services for TriStar in Hendersonville and Portland.

"There was no place nearby if you had any kind of emergency," she said. "And now the citizens of Portland and the surrounding county have that access right here."

The purpose of the facility is those initial emergency services. If someone needs to be kept overnight they would be moved to a full-sized hospital.

The Portland ER has a helipad for the most serious trauma cases.
