Man Killed In Overnight House Fire In North Nashville

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The man killed in a house fire early Wednesday morning in north Nashville has been identified.

Family members said 63-year-old Albert Mays died inside his home on Cephas Street around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters said he likely died while trying to escape. He was found on the floor of his bedroom by the door frame.

"To think about the pain of it, that's kind of bad, to think about if he went through some pain, because he was a good person , he was a good person," said Iris Turner who was a friend of Mays.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but investigators said it started in the kitchen of the home and foul play was not suspected.

There were no working smoke detectors inside the home, according to fire investigators.

After working for hours, the fire rekindled twice throughout the morning, causing firefighters to have to come back out. At one point, the roof collapsed.

The flames were so intense that it was a challenge for firefighters already at a disadvantage working in the cold weather.
