Parents Await Zoning Results Of Metro Selection Day

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Thousands of parents were at the mercy of a computer Saturday, as they waited to see whether or not their children had been zoned for the school of their choice.

Nearly 16,000 applications were submitted by parents for their children to attend a school outside their zone. More than 100 parents and students gathered at the Martin Professional Development Center to see if their number was chosen.

"I just want them to have a better, a different feel, a different environment," said one parent.

For many parents, there is a great deal at stake for the decision. Each number drawn, represented a new opportunity for a child.

"We would move if necessary depending on where we ended up in the school, but also to give our children the best choices that they can," said parent Charlotte Bishop. "So it's a big deal."

Many parents were instead placed on a waiting list.

"We say if you choose your school based on what your neighbor says you'll end up at the best school for your neighbor's child," said Meredith Libbey, spokesperson for Metro Nashville Public Schools. "It really pays off if you and your child go and visit schools I think you'll be pleasantly surprised."

Families have until February to enroll in their chosen school zone.
