NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Nashville man was hurt trying to save his dog while the animal was being stabbed.

Police said 24-year-old Jacob Campbell heard his pit bull yelping in the yard outside his home on Weston Cove in Antioch just after midnight on Tuesday and discovered an intruder stabbing the animal. Authorities said Campbell tackled the suspect and was stabbed in the left shoulder while trying to save his dog.

Nashville Police spokeswoman Kris Mumford said police are still searching for the suspect, who fled on foot. Mumford said the dog was taken to an emergency vet and will make a full recovery, and the owner was treated at a local hospital and released.

Police are still trying to determine why the dog was stabbed. Mumford said the dog may have surprised the suspect.
