NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Two parents have been charged with murder after the death of their 22-month-old son.
Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said Christopher and Jamey Chaffin have been charged with the June 20, 2013 death of their son.
Police said an autopsy initially showed no physical indication of foul play. They said toxicology testing later showed very high and toxic levels of morphine in his body.
According to investigators, Jamey Chaffin had been prescribed morphine for back pain along with additional medications for other conditions.
The suspects have also been charged with multiple counts of child neglect, after police said conditions in their home were filthy and deplorable. Officers said bags of garbage were found on the floor, which was also littered with dirty diapers and animal feces.
The couple's three other children were removed from the home on June 20th.
Students in the Academy of Energy and Power at Maplewood are busy getting ready for next week's Project Expo and had the opportunity to show it off some of their projects to Tennessee Congressman Jim Cooper.
