NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A grandfather has been charged with attempted homicide after police said he shot his grandson during a domestic dispute.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said 33-year-old Thomas Lamont Johnson was shot in the abdomen Sunday at a home on Lynwood Avenue. Police said the victim's 83-year-old grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Teague, has been charged with attempted criminal homicide and unlawful gun possession.

Police said the two had been arguing about Johnson crashing a car that was given to him by his grandparents. Neighbors say they haven't seen trouble at the home before.

"We never heard them arguing or anything like that," said David Bailey, who lives next door. "I'm surprised and I just happened to see the blue lights myself."

Bailey couldn't imagine Teague being violent.

"The man seemed like a docile type of person to me, and I didn't see him in any way being violent."

According to officials, Johnson left the home for a short period of time but later returned to the home. Police said Teague allegedly fired two shots, one of which Johnson in the abdomen.

"The grandson's activities began to wear on the grandfather and instead of calling the police, trying to do something differently, he decided to take matters into his own hands, and that's not just something we all as a society can live with," said Metro Police Spokesman Don Aaron.

Johnson was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where police said he was in critical condition. Investigators said Johnson is a convicted felon with a lengthy arrest history who is presently on probation for aggravated assault.

Teague has been held in lieu of $800,000 bond pending a hearing later in the week.
