MTSU Recording Industry Department Gets Boost From Grammys

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – If you saw the Grammys on Sunday night on NewsChannel 5, you might have caught the ad for MTSU's Department of Recording Industry.

That 30-second spot was just one of the ways the school is trying to spread the word about its unique program, just down the road from Music City.

Classes take place inside recording studios that appear better suited for Music Row, as opposed to a typical classroom, and students work on hands-on music scores and recording equipment during class time.

In addition to the television spot, several faculty members and MTSU leaders visited LA themselves, attending the Grammys, and talking with industry professionals about the recording industry program in Murfreesboro.

"There is nowhere else in the country where you can come for this range of expertise, this range of education, this range of experience, and so we feel like we have to deliver that message," said Ken Paulson, the Dean of the university's Mass Communication department, which oversees the Recording Industry program.

Several of the graduates of MTSU's recording industry program have gone on to win Grammys themselves.  In fact, one of its former students, Luke Laird, co-produced Kacey Musgraves' album, "Same Trailer, Different Park," which won the Grammy for Best Country Album this year.
