Franklin County Teen Dies From Alcohol Overdose

Posted: Updated:

WINCHESTER, Tenn. – A Franklin County teen has died from an alcohol overdose, according to police. Two other teens were hospitalized and two adults faced possible charges.

The teens were discovered by a patrol officer with the Winchester Police Department Wednesday evening.

Chief Dennis Young said the officer noticed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a local hotel. He found five individuals inside the vehicle. He said 18-year-old Michael Gates was unconscious and unresponsive. Gates was not breathing.

Another teen identified as 19-year-old Austin Hopkins was conscious but also required medical treatment. Officials said they had been drinking.

Both were transported by ground to Southern Tennessee Medical Center. They were then sent to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Young said Gates died from his condition Thursday morning. Officials suspected alcohol overdose, but an autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

A third teen, 19-year-old Dakota Lewis, was also at the scene and was arrested for underage consumption.

Two adults were also found in the vehicle, a 27-year-old female and 32-year-old male. Both were considered persons of interest in the case, but their identities were withheld by police.

Young said the two individuals were cooperating. He said the District Attorney General's office would determine if any charges would be filed, pending the outcome of the investigation.
