MT. JULIET, Tenn. – Two people were taken into custody Thursday morning following a brief pursuit in Mt. Juliet.

Mt. Juliet Police said an officer attempted to stop a 1996 Toyota Camry on Interstate 40 westbound for a traffic violation around 7:15 a.m. The driver did not stop, and led officers into Davidson County for a brief time before turning around and heading east on I-40.

An officer deployed a spike system in front of the car near the Mt. Juliet Road interchange, which deflated two of the tires and disabled the vehicle.

"The quicker we can get the pursuit stopped the safer it is for the person running from us, the officer and the public," said Sgt. Tyler Chandler with the Mt. Juliet Police Department.

Officers were able to take the driver and passenger into custody without incident.

"(The officer) was able to deploy the spike strip and ensured it only hit the offender that was fleeing," he added.

The driver, 51-year-old Edward Judkins of Smithville, was charged with evading and reckless endangerment. His passenger, 41-year-old Candida Driver also of Smithville, was arrested on existing warrants for evading and failure to appear in court in DeKalb County.

Police said Driver also tried to conceal a bag of marijuana in her underpants, but it was discovered by medical personnel. She was also charged with simple possession of a scheduled IV drug.

A court date was set for both on May 13.
