Kentucky Offices Await Guidance On Same-Sex Marriage

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A federal judge said he will decide by late Friday afternoon whether to delay implementation of his order granting legal recognition to same-sex couples in Kentucky.

U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn II said the ruling will come by 4 p.m. EST on the state's request to stay his decision overturning Kentucky's law barring recognition of same-sex unions in other states.

The decision will impact how quickly clerks of court around the state will have to handle requests for name changes and other legal benefits of marriage. On Thursday, Heyburn issued a final order in the case formally overturning the ban put in place by voters in 2004.

Jefferson County clerk's spokesman Nore Ghibaudy said as of Friday state officials have offered no notice that the law has changed and clerks' offices are awaiting guidance.
