DICKSON, Tenn. - Three workers at a local transfer station in Dickson are being hailed as heroes after saving a puppy that was thrown out in the trash.

Troy Holt has worked at the Dickson County Solid Waste center for 23 years. Most of his days are spent sitting in a front end loader, pushing trash around to dump into 18-wheelers so it can be hauled off.

On Friday, he was doing just that when over the incredibly loud piece of machinery he heard something crying.

"I heard something holler, I kept on and then I thought I heard something again and stopped and sure thing there was that puppy," Holt said.

Troy thinks the puppy was dumped by a large garbage truck where it more than likely was crush inside by a hydraulic compacting machine. Somehow it was still alive when Troy managed to pull it from beneath six or seven feet of refuse.

"He was weak, he couldn't hardly stand up, I thought his legs might had been broken. He was all dirty and wet and just pitiful looking," he added.

"It's just so sad," Troy continued.

The dog was taken to a local animal rescue shelter where he was given the name "Midas." After a few days at the vet, he was released to a foster home on Monday, where he is doing much better.

Officials said if this was done intentionally, the person responsible could face serious animal cruelty charges.
