Dangers Of Drugs And Driving Highlighted At Event

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The White House drug policy director is offering a sobering message about driving while under the influence of drugs.

Acting Director Michael Botticelli of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy says there are a frightening number of drugged drivers on the nation's highways.

Botticelli said the country has made significant strides when it comes to getting drunken drivers off the road, but communities need to raise awareness about the dangers of getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs.

He said that one survey showed that as many as one in eight people who drive at night on the weekends tested positive for illegal drugs.

The comments were made in Nashville during a gathering of the largest highway safety meeting in the nation.
