MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A pool store in Murfreesboro went up in flames on Monday morning, sending four people to the hospital.

When firefighters responded to Brad's Pool Shop at 1802 Memorial Boulevard around 10:45 a.m., they found heavy smoke coming from the building.

Crews began an interior attack, while rescue crews had to force their way in the back of the building through a bay door to clear out some of the smoke.

Extreme caution had to be exercised due to the chemicals kept on site. Assistant Chief Kaye Jernigan said it appeared that most of the chlorine was kept in the front of the store, and was undamaged by the fire.

"Some alkaline-based chemicals did receive fire damage," Jernigan said. "City Engineer Sam Huddleston is on site assessing the hazardous materials threat."

Four people were taken to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators said the fire appears to have started in the back of the building, but the cause was not yet known.

The pool shop, which spans two units in the shopping center, received heavy smoke damage, moderate fire damage to the back of the store, and some water damage. First Cash, which is next door, had to be evacuated and also had some smoke damage.

Both businesses will remain closed until further notice.
