Soldier Assigned To Fort Campbell Killed In Afghanistan

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – A soldier assigned to Fort Campbell has been killed in Afghanistan after his unit took enemy fire.

Officials with the U.S. Department of Defense said 20-year-old Pfc. Matthew H. Walker from Hillsboro, Missouri was killed June 5. His unit was attacked in the Paktika province of Afghanistan.

Walker died after being hit by enemy fire. He was an infantryman serving with the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell.

A press release said his awars and decorations included the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one bronze service star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
